A Collection Introduction
The Women in these stories are not famous.
They did not lead countries, build corporations, or make history books. Most lived ordinary lives in small towns and farmhouses. They raised children, tended gardens, clipped recipes, balanced budgets, cared for aging parents, and showed up day after day for the people they loved.
Yet their influence reaches far beyond the boundaries of their own lives.
For years, I carried their stories with me. Some had been told around kitchen tables and at family gatherings for as long as I could remember. Others surfaced through old photographs, newspaper clippings, letters, and conversations. What began as a desire to preserve a few memories gradually became a collection of essays about inheritance in its many forms.
Not financial inheritance, but emotional inheritance.
Curiosity. Resilience. Humor. Faith. Hospitality. The ability to endure difficult seasons. The habit of showing up. The understanding that love is often expressed through ordinary acts repeated over time.
These essays are my attempt to honor the women who helped make me who I am. They are also an invitation to consider the people who shaped you.
Because every family has women whose influence lingers long after they are gone.
The women are gone.
The conversation continues.
